Cataract FAQs

The more you know about cataracts, the more ways you can protect your eyes and prevent any vision problems. An eye doctor in San Antonio, TX can help if you are noticing signs of cataracts.

What Is a Cataract?

A cataract is a cloudiness of the lens on your eye. Since the lens is normally clear, this can make it harder to see. Cataracts can develop in either eye one at a time or at the same time.

What Are Cataracts Symptoms?

If you have cataracts, you may start to notice some vision changes. Some vision changes include halos around lights, increased sensitivity to light, double vision, blurry vision, or a yellow or brownish tint.

What Are the Risk Factors for Cataracts?

Anyone can get cataracts. Some babies can be born with them due to a complication during pregnancy. However, many people that have cataracts are over the age of 40. Vision symptoms may not present themselves until age 60. There are certain health and lifestyle factors that mean cataracts are more likely to develop. These include diabetes, eye injury, excessive alcohol use, diabetes, high blood pressure, and smoking.

How Are Cataracts Treated?

Surgery is currently the only treatment available for cataracts. If you aren’t ready to undergo the surgery, there are ways to improve your vision with stronger contacts and glasses. You can also use bright lights to work on projects or read. Your eye doctor can help you determine when the right time for cataract surgery is.

Are There Different Types of Cataract Surgery?

The treatment and surgery involve removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial one. There are two different approaches to this. Phacoemulsification is the most common form where the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to break up the lens in order to remove it. The lens can also be removed in one piece with a bigger incision. Once the lens is removed you have the option of different lenses. You can choose a monofocal lens or a multifocal lens to give you better near and distance vision.
