Dry eye is a condition that results from inadequate tear production. Tears are important for eye health and clear vision. Having enough high-quality tears is important to keep the eyes free from infections and irritants that settle on the cornea. There are many reasons why people suffer from dry eye. At Vision 3C Specialists in San Antonio TX, our ophthalmology practice offers a full array of services, including eye exams to diagnose and treat dry eye syndrome. Dry eye is a four-season eye condition, but winter makes the condition worse. There are some things that you can do, however, to help alleviate the worst of the symptoms.
When you turn on the heat, it dries out the air in the interior of your home. To make sure the air in your home does not agitate your dry eye, consider running a humidifier. This will place additional moisture into the air, relieving the symptoms of dry eye.
It is always a good idea to drink a lot of water but in the winter. If you have dry eyes, staying hydrated is even more important than usual. Try to limit coffee and other beverages that can have a dehydrating effect if ingested in large quantities.
Ask your eye doctor for a prescription for artificial tears, or use over the counter eye drops. If you are not producing tears, adding artificial tears or eye drops will keep your eyes comfortable and well-lubricated.
Being inside during the winter means you will likely be spending more time looking at digital screens. When spending extended periods on your computer, phone, or other electronic devices, be sure to take regular breaks to allow your eyes to relax and re-focus.
