The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that there are one million blind people in America. If you are experiencing any of the early signs of vision loss, contact an ophthalmologist for an eye exam right away. Dr. Trujillo and our team at Vision 3C Specialists in San Antonio would like to take a look at some of the early signs of vision loss.

Blurry Vision

Everyone gets blurry vision now and then, but it usually goes away. If your blurry vision does not go away, then you need an eye exam. Constant blurry vision is a sign of many eye conditions that can cause blindness like cataracts or keratitis.

Dark Spots

Dark spots or strings that stay still or constantly move need to be checked, especially if you have diabetes or have recently suffered a blow to the head. They often do not get better over time if left untreated. Dark spots can be signs of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, detached retina, or age-related macular degeneration.

Night Blindness

Night blindness occurs when you try to drive at night and are blinded by the other cars’ headlights. Even lights from stop signs, streetlights, or traffic lights may seem glaring or hard to place. If you have driven at night for years and never had problems before, you need to see an eye doctor. This can be an early sign of cataracts, retinitis pigmentosa, or complications from diabetes.

Sudden Eye Pain

If you have sudden eye pain combined with nausea, a terrible headache, red eyes, blurry vision, and seeing rings or halos around lights, go to the emergency room right away. This could be a stroke or acute angle-closure glaucoma. Both conditions can cause permanent blindness if not treated right away.

Other Changes in Vision

You need an eye exam if you experience any other constant changes in your vision, such as cloudy vision,  faded colors, everything looking a bit yellow, a reduction in your field of vision, or if you need more light to do everyday tasks.
